Do you think your preteen has blackheads?

Or could they be sebaceous filaments?

Sebaceous Filaments vs Blackheads What You Need to Know

If you’ve noticed tiny dots on your preteens nose or forehead, you’re not alone. Many assume these are blackheads but in most cases, they’re actually something completely normal called sebaceous filaments.

Understanding the difference can help you avoid unnecessary worry (and over-treating young skin).

What are sebaceous filaments?

Sebaceous filaments are a natural part of the skin. Every pore contains one. They help move oil (sebum) from inside the skin to the surface to keep it healthy.

They typically look like:

Small grey, beige, or slightly yellow dots think of a strawberry!
Evenly spaced across the nose, chin, or forehead.
Flat and not raised

They are completely normal even in children and don’t need to be treated or removed.

What are blackheads?

Blackheads (also called open comedones) are a mild form of acne.

They occur when a pore becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. When this material is exposed to air, it oxidises and turns dark/black.

Blackheads tend to be:

Darker (brown or black)
Less uniform (not in every pore)
Slightly more noticeable or raised

Why do children get them?

Around ages 8–10, children may begin early hormonal changes that increase oil production in the skin. This is completely normal and can lead to:

* More visible sebaceous filaments
* The occasional blackhead

In most cases, younger skin is still developing so what you’re seeing is usually more normal than problematic.

Do sebaceous filaments need treatment?

No sebaceous filaments are not something that can or should be “removed". They will always come back because they are part of how healthy skin functions.

Instead, the focus should be on:

* Keeping skin clean and balanced
* Supporting the skin barrier
* Avoiding harsh or unnecessary treatments

How to care for your child’s skin

For pre-teens, simple and gentle skincare is best:

* Use a mild cleanser like our Gentle Daily Cleanser
* Encourage washing after sports or sweating
* Avoid picking, squeezing, or pore strips
* Only introduce targeted products like Daily Foam Cleanser if blackheads are clearly developing and keep it minimal to once or twice a week to start.
